La Bande à Tyrex, a bicycle ballet
What happens when twelve professional acrobats jump on bicycles and pick up musical instruments? The French collective La Bande à Tyrex will bring to the Carnaval Sztukmistrzów (23-26 July, Lublin) a performance that redefines the very idea of bicycle acrobatics. About the performance
This year’s edition of Carnaval Sztukmistrzów will once again feature spectacular open-air performances staged at Plac Litewski, Plac po Farze, and the green areas surrounding Browar Perła. One of them will be the open-air show by La Bande à Tyrex. The group’s production is a format rarely seen even at Europe’s biggest festivals. One of their defining features is that they do not rely on prerecorded music during the performance—instead, they create the soundtrack live themselves. While some artists balance on handlebars and perform complex acrobatic tricks, others pick up a trombone, bass guitar, or percussion instruments. Their repertoire includes both original compositions and iconic pop standards performed in energetic rock’n’roll arrangements.
Expect spectacular and extraordinary feats (…) that will leave you breathless. On bicycles or unicycles, solo or in pairs, these daredevils roll, spin, jump, and flirt with imbalance with boundless energy. They will blow your mind!

During the performance, the artists use bicycles to build complex collective acrobatic formations. They leap from one handlebar to another, slide, and balance on the edge of collapse. There are no barriers and no great distance separating performers from the audience. Spectators stand just an arm’s length away from the spinning wheels. Beyond world-class acrobatics, audiences can expect a wild story about community, trust, and the joy of being together. As the performers themselves say: we are friends who want to have fun and invite the audience into our circle.

Fear of not being fulfilled, of not being loved, of being abandoned, rejected, of being ridiculous, of dying alone… After a ten-kilometre jog through the city, the artist places himself in the
middle of a white space surrounded by high walls.

About the Carnaval Sztukmistrzów
Carnaval Sztukmistrzów is the largest festival in Poland showcasing contemporary circus arts. For years the event has attracted crowds of residents and tourists to the city. They are drawn not only by world-class circus performances, but also by the magical atmosphere of the festival. The program includes clowning, acrobatics, juggling, and illusion shows presented as engaging circus performances, as well as attractions for children and concerts. It is the most performatively diverse festival in the country. In addition, the Carnaval is accompanied by the Urban Highline Festival—the oldest and largest highline festival in the world held in an urban space. Most of the festival program is free of charge and takes place in streets, squares, and public spaces. Some events are ticketed and can be seen in theatres and performance halls.
