Free events at Carnaval Sztukmistrzów 2022! Check it out!

The 13th edition of Carnaval Sztukmistrzów takes place between 28-31 July 2022. Lublin’s Old Town will once more come alive with breathtaking shows performed by street performers and masters of circus arts. The majority of the programme is made up of new circus, an art form inspired by traditional circus veering between theatre and performance art. Tickets for paid shows are still available via Going. However, the programme offers more than 20 different shows that are entirely free. Carnaval’s visitors can look forward to fantastic street performances, duets, solo acts, music, and busker performances, which, as usual, will take place in the streets, squares, and charming corners of Lublin.

About the shows

On Friday and Saturday, Litewski Square will become the domain of Double Take Cinematic Circus. In the street show Jump Cut”, the artists remove all walls of intimacy and transfer their living room to Litewski Square, where, using a wide array of circus techniques, they will present the ups and downs of their eventful domestic life. It’s a family show that kids are sure to enjoy.

Families will also love the show performed by Compagnia Lanutti e Corbo. “Zirk Comedy” with its dream-like, surreal art will take us to the enchanted world of music, clowning and illusion created by the Italian pair.

The Polish performance “Hey, Neighbour?!” by the duo Fantasmagorie will be presented in Krąpiec Square, located between Staszica Street and The Palace of the Czartoryski Family. The show, which was presented in April as a component of the contest showcase at The Polish Incident, made the audience, which included both kids and adults, laugh aloud.

The team behind the show “The Mechanics”, namely the group ALE Circus Dance Company,  are the distinguished winners of “The Polish incident” contest. Their acrobatic and juggling show will dazzle both the sidewalks and the sky above Litewski Square.

The French aerial female trio Cie Mesdemoiselles will perform another acrobatic show The performers will take the stage atop a several-metre high structure set up in Błonia near the Lublin Castle. The women will hold a dialogue among colourful clothing piled on the stage, producing both a made-up and realistic image of a woman.

The festival’s free performances also feature two intriguing male-female duos with vastly different roots. The fiery Argentinian duo Cie Rampante gleefully combine a range of circus and theatre techniques, such as acrobatics, object manipulation, and Cyr wheel, in honour of the limitless abilities of the circus performer.

The Slovak Street Theatre with the show Balaton 1982 is on the other end of the spectrum. This interactive street theatre uses miming and clowning to take viewers on a sentimental holiday journey to the socialist era. The artists will ride through Lublin on an old bicycle and show the absurdities and follies of the justly bygone times.

Among solo performances, we will see the Italian street performer Andy Spigola. This anxious playboy enjoys magic, dance, and heights. His incredible feats, which alternate between folly and courage, will transport you to an absurd universe where only one catchphrase is valid: BOATO!

Urban Highline Festival will once again draw to Lublin daring slackliners. Urban Highline Festival is the oldest highline festival in Europe, and the largest official highline festival in the world taking place in the urban space. This international event has been held in Lublin since 2009 and thus far has drawn to the city thousands of highliners from 56 countries. The spectators watch these daredevils walk on lines stretched high above Lublin’s busy streets. This year, we will be able to admire their aerial walks in the Old Town and in the area by the Centre for the Meeting of Cultures.

The programme also features concerts, a food truck zone, AeriaLove Workshops in Błonia near the Castle and the Festival club “Juggler Bar”. Set up to spread joy, the festival club is a welcoming place for every visitor and a place providing artistic sustenance. You can rest here during the day before exploring the festival’s attractions, and after sunset enjoy dancing and barroom acrobatics.

International buskers who submitted their ideas in response to the open call for projects are one thing that is certain to surprise the audience. A year ago, the contest was only open to Polish artists, but this year the formula was expanded to include artists from all around the world, thus completely doing away with the concept of borders.
