Edition 2021 / 2022
The first full edition of the project consisted of several stages. At the end of 2021, we held an open call for projects. From 26 submissions, 12 were shortlisted and 8 were selected to take part in a 5 day master class with French director and circus artist Lucio Smit. The next stages of the project were completed in 2022.
Between 22-24 April, the Academic Cultural Centre “Chatka Żaka” hosted 8 acts who presented 20-minute excerpts of their contest entries in a “Work-in-progress” format. Audience members voted on the performances, and there was an open discussion between critics and the public about the shows.
On May 12, we announced the results of the contest and presented the winning projects:
“The Trick” by Wojciech Rotowski and Roman Słomka (Grand Prix)
“Ex-Libris” by Marta Mądry
“Shhh…” by Tomasz Piotrowski.
Honourable mentions were given to: “The Mechanics” by ALE Circus Dance Company and “Hey, Neighbour?!” by the duo Fantasmagorie.
Additionally, the project’s partners presented their own awards:
New Circus Centre – FAMA Library and Cultural Center in Wrocław: art residence for Marta Mądry’s “Ex-libris;
Kolekty “Kejos” from Wrocław: professional support for Marta Mądry’s “Ex-Libris”
Teatr Rampa from Warsaw – residence and professional support for Kolektyw INC’s “The wedding went on until 3:33”
The winning and honorable mention shows presented their finished versions at Carnaval Sztukmistrzów, 28-30 July. “Ex-libris” and “Shh…” had their official premieres at the festival. In total, ten performances from “The Polish Incident” were featured at the festival.
The grand finale of The Polish Incident’s project in 2022 was the world premiere of the Grand Prix show, “The Trick”, which was held on 3 December.
