2024

The third edition of The Polish Incident kicks off in late autumn in Lublin. This project aims to support the development of the Polish circus community, with a primary focus on inspiring and assisting artists in the creative process of crafting contemporary circus performances. As the organisers of the largest Polish circus festival, we are keen on expanding the programme of Carnaval Sztukmistrzów, scheduled for July 25-28, 2024 with valuable Polish productions, as well as enhancing the visibility of Polish creators both domestically and internationally.

About the project

The project focuses on enhancing the performance skills of circus performers and artists in related disciplines. It also aims to foster dialogue and collaboration among various art forms such as music, circus, and theatre. This project offers tools that help artists enhance their creative work, whether they are working on individual or group projects. This year’s edition focuses on expanding the possibilities of communication by developing acting skills such as movement theatre and stage presence. It also includes basic clowning techniques, such as communication with the audience and exploring the potential of stage personas and characters. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to work with music and sound.

Who is it for?

We invite applications from artists and groups that have a background in circus, artists working with music, musicians, musical actors, and artists of related arts. We offer participants the opportunity to take part in two types of workshops. Separate recruitment processes are conducted for each.

Workshops

Part I consists of  “The Poetry of the Playful Fool“– a two-day workshop conducted by the clown and comedian Piotr Sikora. This clowning workshop is open to all those who perform or would like to engage in performing arts, focusing on how to work on creativity and how to turn failures into success.

Part II consists of “Circus LAB. It’s a  workshop dedicated to artists with some experience in circus or music. Especially those who have ideas for new circus productions or are already working on something specific and  are looking for creative inspiration. During the workshop and coaching sessions led by experienced circus performers from the Kejos Collective: artist and circus director Marta Kuczynska and musician, circus director Jack Timingeriu. During the 5-day workshop, we will experiment with acting techniques, clowning and music. We will focus on developing the participants’ performance and stage ideas.

Why should you do it?
The outcome of the workshops will be to develop or refine ideas for new circus performances. The most captivating workshop projects or acts will qualify for next stages of the Polish Incident project in 2024. They will receive our support in implementing their performance idea, and the best productions will have the opportunity to premiere at Carnaval Sztukmistrzów which takes place between 25-28 July 2024 in Lublin.

A SPECIAL PERFORMANCE

The workshop offer will be complemented by a special performance of Piotr Sikora’s show “Furiozo. Man looking for trouble”.  It’s a punk rock comedy clown show that addresses toxic masculinity. The eponymous character amuses, shocks, and touches the audience by constantly getting into trouble. The parodic and absurd nature of the performance has captured the hearts of European audiences, and the show made it to the shortlist of the Comedian’s Choice Awards 2023 in the “Best Show” category at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
